10 Tips for Better Sketching in SolidWorks

1. Dimension to the Outside of Arcs

When dimensioning arcs, you might want to dimension to the outside. Simply hold down the shift key, click the first arc, keep holding shift, and click the second arc. This ensures dimensions are from the outside to the outside, streamlining your sketching process.

2. Utilize Hover for Quick Information

While sketching, hover over things to get quick information. For example, hovering over a line provides the midpoint, and selecting the center and pausing provides a quick palette for possible references.

3. Dimension Symmetrically with Centerlines

When aiming for symmetrical dimensions,  add a centerline. Dimensioning from the centerline will allow for full symmetrical dimensions.

4. Switch Between Line and Tangent Arc Mode

Easily switch between line and tangent arc modes on the fly. Drawing a line and returning to the starting point results in a tangent arc.

5. Enter Dimensions and Conversions Directly

Enter unit conversions directly into dimension boxes. You can also do calculations in dimension boxes on the fly.

6. Integrate Equations into Dimension Boxes

Enhance flexibility by entering functions directly into dimension boxes. For instance, start with an equal sign, click a dimension, and input an equation. Now, any changes to the original dimension will be calculated in this dimension.

Keep features centered by utilizing construction lines. Hover over the bottom line until the midpoint pops up, then click it, control-click the origin, and click ‘make vertical’ for perfect alignment.

9. Dimension Angles with Single Legs

When dimensioning angles with only one leg available, start the dimension, click the leg, and then the vertex. SolidWorks offers options for the other vertex, streamlining the process.

Perfect your object selection techniques. Understand that selecting from left to right grabs items fully inside the window, while right to left selects everything it crosses. Utilize CTRL+A to select everything in the sketch quickly.
